It's a question we get asked all the time — should I buy new from an authorised dealer or go pre-owned? The honest answer depends on what you're after, but for most buyers, pre-owned wins on almost every measure. Here's why.
Availability — The Biggest Factor
Walk into a Rolex authorised dealer in Sydney today and try to buy a Submariner or GMT-Master II off the shelf. In most cases you can't. Rolex production is deliberately limited and the most desirable references go to waitlisted clients with purchase history. The pre-owned market solves this problem immediately — if we have it in stock, you can have it this week.
Price — Pre-Owned is Often Smarter
A brand new Rolex Submariner Date (126610LN) retails for AU$18,950 at an authorised dealer — and that's if you can even get one, given the waitlists most authorised dealers operate. On the pre-owned market, a recent model Submariner in excellent condition with full set will typically cost slightly more than retail — but you actually get the watch, today, without a waitlist or relationship requirement.
For older references that are discontinued — like the 116610LN or the Hulk — the pre-owned market is the only option. And many of these are holding or increasing in value.
Condition — Better Than You'd Expect
Modern pre-owned Rolex watches are built to last decades. A watch from 2018 in excellent condition, serviced and authenticated, will perform identically to a new one. At The Watch Business every watch is inspected and authenticated by our in-house watchmaker before we buy or sell it.
Warranty — Covered Either Way
Buying pre-owned doesn't mean buying without protection. Any watch we sell with remaining manufacturer warranty transfers with the watch. On older pieces, we provide our own 12-month in-house warranty on every sale.
The Bottom Line
If you want the most popular references without a waitlist, and you want to make a smarter financial decision, pre-owned is the way to go. The watch is the same — the experience is better.
